Leads DevOps and SRE teams to build reliable, scalable, and secure AWS-based production infrastructure while spending 20-30% time on hands-on architecture and tooling work.

Lead Remote Posted about 7 hours ago We Work Remotely — Programming
What this role involves

Headquarters: Remote, United States

Director of Production Engineering

Remote, United States

About this Position

Are you passionate about building the reliability, automation, and security foundations that let engineering teams move fast with confidence? At Legion, we are seeking a Director of Engineering, DevOps & SRE to lead the teams responsible for the availability, scalability, and security of our production environment. Our production infrastructure runs on AWS, leveraging services such as EKS, RDS, and a broad set of AWS-native technologies. You will partner closely with engineering and IT to build resilient systems, drive operational excellence, and ensure our platform meets the highest standards of security and compliance.

This is a hands-on leadership role where you'll spend ~20-30% of your time contributing directly to architecture, tooling, and incident response, and the rest driving vision, roadmap, and cross-team execution.

Responsibilities

  • Hire and build a globally-distributed DevOps/SRE engineering team. Recruit, mentor, and manage engineers, and foster a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Own the reliability and infrastructure roadmap for our AWS-based production environment, including EKS, RDS, and related AWS services, ensuring scalability, high availability, and cost efficiency.
  • Lead the organization's security operations (SecOps) practice, including vulnerability management, threat detection, incident response, and remediation, to proactively identify and resolve security issues before they impact customers.
  • Define and drive engineering OKRs for infrastructure reliability, automation, and security, and track progress against measurable outcomes.
  • Champion observability and alerting best practices (e.g., Datadog), including automating alert triage and response to reduce mean-time-to-resolution.
  • Solid understanding of agentic AI infrastructure and how AI agentic workflows apply to SDLC and DevOps processes (e.g., automated investigation, remediation, and PR-generation pipelines).
  • Drive Infrastructure-as-Code, CI/CD, and automation practices to increase engineering velocity and reduce operational toil.
  • Work closely with engineering and IT teams to align on infrastructure standards, access controls, tooling, and compliance requirements across the organization.
  • Ensure the platform meets the highest standards of security, compliance, and data protection; implement and maintain robust security controls and audit-readiness.
  • Lead and participate in the Incident Management on-call rotation, working with SRE and development teams to meet and exceed availability goals.
  • Stay current on cloud, DevOps, and security best practices, and provide technical guidance and thought leadership to the broader engineering organization.

Required Qualifications

  • 8-12 years of experience in DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, or production infrastructure roles, including people management experience.
  • Deep hands-on experience running production workloads on AWS, including EKS (Kubernetes), RDS, and other core AWS services (e.g., VPC, IAM, Lambda, S3).
  • Demonstrated experience running security operations (SecOps) — vulnerability management, incident response, and remediation of production security issues.
  • 5+ years of experience leveraging observability platforms (e.g., Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana) to drive reliability, performance, and alerting improvements.
  • Strong experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation) and CI/CD automation.
  • Proficiency in at least one of Go, Python, or Bash, with day-to-day use of Git and test automation pipelines.
  • Hands-on experience operating Linux/Unix production platforms (Amazon Linux, Ubuntu, RHEL/CentOS).
  • Proven track record partnering cross-functionally with engineering and IT teams to align on infrastructure, tooling, and security standards.
  • Demonstrated experience leading incident management and on-call practices for high-availability production systems.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field required; Master's degree preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with major cloud providers beyond AWS, such as Google Cloud Platform or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).
  • Relevant security certifications (e.g., CISSP, AWS Security Specialty, CKS).
  • Experience with compliance frameworks such as SOC 2, ISO 27001, or HIPAA.
  • 3+ years of experience with Kubernetes or other containerization/orchestration platforms at scale.
  • Experience with Kubernetes-native delivery tooling, including Argo Workflows and Helm.
  • 5+ years of experience leading teams in an agile/scrum environment.
  • Experience building or scaling automated investigation and remediation pipelines for production error classes.

If you're ready to make an impact and grow your career, Legion is where you belong. Join us in making hourly work rewarding and fulfilling.

BACKGROUND AND OPPORTUNITY

There are almost 75 million hourly workers in the United States, representing more than half of the entire workforce. Historically, managing hourly employees has been difficult due to high attrition (average of 60%) and high replacement costs (average of $3,200 per employee in retail). The ongoing labor shortage and competition from the gig economy make it more difficult to attract and retain hourly employees. The top reasons hourly employees leave their jobs are a lack of schedule empowerment, poor communication with employers, and an inability to get paid early. Gen Z and the millennial workforce demand gig-like flexibility, modern technology, and compelling work options. Legion’s mission is to turn hourly jobs into good jobs, serving the hourly workers who make up the majority of the US workforce. We believe in empowering employees and helping employers be efficient and innovative by enabling intelligent automation powered by Legion’s Workforce Management platform to optimize labor efficiency and enhance the employee experience simultaneously. Legion WFM was built for the cloud with AI at the core and designed to handle the complexity of modern businesses and meet the needs of today’s hourly employees.  Our team is comprised of dedicated individuals from all backgrounds and experiences, globally distributed across all time zones.

DISABILITY ACCOMMODATION

For individuals with disabilities who need additional assistance at any point in the application and interview process, please email recruiting@legion.co

We have noticed a rise in recruiting impersonations across the industry, where scammers attempt to access candidates' personal and financial information through fake interviews and offers. All Legion recruiting email communications will always come from the @legion.co domain. Any outreach claiming to be from Legion via other sources should be ignored. If you are uncertain whether you have been contacted by an official Legion employee, reach out to recruiting@legion.co

How We Determine What We Pay

As a global employer, Legion determines pay for positions using local, national, and industry-specific survey data. We evaluate external equity and the cost of labor/prevailing wage index in the relative marketplace for jobs directly comparable to jobs within our company. Our posted salary range is based on national data and may be refined for a candidate's region/town/cost of living. For new hires, we strive to make competitive offers allowing the new employee room for future growth. Salaries will be based on the applicant’s location, level of experience, education, and specialized knowledge and skills. Additionally, we consider the external market rate, the amount we have budgeted internally, and internal equity within the company for the same position. An employee/candidate with a stronger skill set will receive higher pay.

Engineer Principal Software Engineer at HubSpot

Designs and builds HubSpot's observability platform for distributed systems and AI agents, setting architecture patterns and telemetry standards across hundreds of microservices.

Lead Posted about 15 hours ago RemoteFirstJobs Product
What this role involves

POS-5690

About the Team

The Observability team owns the internal platform that gives every HubSpot engineer real visibility into how their systems behave in production. We build and operate the distributed tracing, metrics, alerting, and logging infrastructure that spans hundreds of microservices, billions of daily events, and thousands of engineers who depend on that signal to ship reliably.

We are now investing in the next generation of this platform. As HubSpot deploys AI agents and ML-powered features across the product, the team is building the tracing and telemetry primitives that make it possible to understand, debug, and trust what those systems are doing in production. This is greenfield, technically interesting work at a scale few companies operate at and we are looking for a Principal Engineer to help lead it.

About the Role

We are seeking a Principal Software Engineer to be the technical anchor for HubSpot’s Observability platform. This role sits at the intersection of large-scale distributed systems, developer platform design, and AI observability. A big part of this role is working horizontally across a large engineering org and setting patterns and standards that make it easier for teams to instrument, alert on, and reason about their services. You will also shape how we trace and understand our growing fleet of AI agents and ML systems in production: a technically distinct and increasingly critical problem.

Key Expectations

  • Observability Platform Architecture: Define the patterns and evolution of HubSpot’s core telemetry platform — distributed tracing, metrics, and structured logging — at a scale that spans hundreds of services and billions of daily events. Set the standards for how instrumentation is done across a large, polyglot engineering organization.
  • AI & Agentic Observability: Lead the technical strategy for tracing and understanding AI agents and ML-powered systems in production. Define the primitives, telemetry standards, and debugging workflows that help product engineers understand what their models and agents are doing — and build trust in those systems over time. This is greenfield and consequential work.
  • High-Cardinality, High-Throughput Systems: Architect telemetry pipelines and storage systems that handle high-cardinality data at high throughput without blowing up cost or query latency. Make principled tradeoffs between sampling, fidelity, retention, and developer ergonomics.
  • Hands-on, High-Leverage Builder: Ship production code. Lead design reviews and take high-impact initiatives end-to-end, from prototype to production system at scale. Stay close to the systems you build and be the person who can debug the hardest problems when they surface.
  • Developer Experience & Adoption: Design the instrumentation APIs and libraries that product engineers reach for, making correct observability the path of least resistance. Drive OpenTelemetry adoption across a large, polyglot codebase. Build the tooling that turns raw telemetry into actionable signal for teams operating at speed.
  • Production Intelligence & Reliability Patterns: Define patterns for SLO/SLI design, alerting philosophy, and how teams graduate from reactive to proactive incident response. Push for simplicity in a domain that wants to get complicated, and consistency where tooling can drift across a large organization.
  • Technical Leadership & Influence: Partner with infrastructure, platform, and product engineering teams to understand their signal gaps and close them. Influence technical strategy alongside engineering leadership, translating observability constraints and opportunities into product and operational decisions. Mentor senior engineers and tech leads, driving thoughtful design decisions and capturing learnings from major incidents and large-scale migrations.

What You Bring

  • Platform-Builder Experience: Proven experience building observability or telemetry tooling for internal engineering teams, rather than simply consuming it. You understand how to architect developer platforms that serve thousands of engineers across a large organization, backed by deep operational instincts and hard-earned expertise.
  • Telemetry Systems Depth: Deep expertise navigating trade-offs in telemetry pipeline design across high-cardinality data, dynamic sampling, query latency, retention economics, and data fidelity. Strong technical fluency with OpenTelemetry, distributed tracing engines, metric backends, and large-scale log ingestion infrastructure.
  • Incident Automation & Operational Excellence: Proven track record linking telemetry signals directly to automated operational workflows. You have designed architecture for real-time telemetry triggers that power automated remediation, dynamic runbooks, or AI-assisted root-cause diagnosis across microservices environments.

Why This Role, Why Now

HubSpot is scaling fast — more engineers, more microservices, more AI systems running in production — and the Observability platform is at an inflection point. The foundations are solid, but the next phase requires a different kind of investment: rethinking cardinality economics, making OpenTelemetry the default across a large polyglot org, and building an entirely new layer of AI tracing that doesn’t yet exist.

This Principal Engineer will have a direct line of sight from the architecture they design to the engineering outcomes we measure: incident response times, adoption rates, developer satisfaction, and the trust that product teams place in their production signal. The AI observability layer in particular is greenfield — there is no playbook to follow, which is exactly what makes this the right moment for the right person.

If you want to build the platform that helps thousands of engineers understand what their systems are doing — including systems powered by AI that are genuinely hard to see inside — this is the role.

Pay & Benefits

The cash compensation below includes base salary, on-target commission for employees in eligible roles, and annual bonus targets under HubSpot’s bonus plan for eligible roles. In addition to cash compensation, some roles are eligible to participate in HubSpot’s equity plan to receive restricted stock units (RSUs). Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay. Individual compensation packages are tailored to your skills, experience, qualifications, and other job-related reasons.

At HubSpot, we value both flexibility and connection. Whether you’re a Remote employee or work from the Office, we want you to start your journey here by building strong connections with your team and peers. If you are joining our Engineering team, you will be required to attend a regional HubSpot office for in-person onboarding. If you join our broader Product team, you’ll also attend other in-person events, such as your Product Group Summit and other gatherings, to continue building on those connections.

Life360’s mission is to keep people close to the ones they love. Our category-leading mobile app, Tile tracking devices, and Pet GPS tracker empower members to protect the people, pets, and things they care about most with a range of services, including location sharing, safe driver reports, and crash detection with emergency dispatch. Life360 serves approximately 102.4 million monthly active users (MAU), as of June 30, 2026, across more than 180 countries.

Life360 delivers peace of mind and enhances everyday family life with seamless coordination for all the moments that matter, big and small. By continuing to innovate and deliver for our customers, we have become a household name and the must-have mobile-based membership for families (and those friends who are basically family).

Life360 has more than 500 (and growing!) remote-first employees. For more information, please visit life360.com.

Life360 is a Remote-First company, which means a remote work environment will be the primary experience for all employees. All positions, unless otherwise specified, can be performed remotely (within the US and Canada) regardless of any specified location above.

We are AI Native

We are building an AI native company where AI is an integral part of how we build and operate. AI tool usage during interviews varies by role. You may be asked to demonstrate proficiency with AI tools, discuss how you leverage AI, or complete interview exercises without AI assistance. Your Recruiter will provide clear guidance as you move through the interview process.

Undisclosed use of AI not previously discussed with or approved by your Recruiter may impact your candidacy.

About The Team

The Vertical Experiences team builds the experiences that bring pets into the family — pet profiles, activity timelines, care coordination, lost pet alerts, and third-party integrations. We sit within Life360’s Devices org, but our work is squarely in the consumer product layer: building experiences that help families care for, track, and stay connected to their pets. We ship frequently, own our features end to end, and work closely with mobile, design, and product to define what pet ownership looks like inside Life360.

We are an AI-Native team. AI isn’t an add-on to how we work — it’s how we work. We’ve redesigned our development workflows around AI, using it as a first-class collaborator at every stage: spec writing, code generation, test authoring, incident triage, and system design. We ship faster and go deeper because of it. We’re looking for engineers who want to help define what AI-native development looks like for a high-traffic consumer product.

About the Job

As a Backend Engineer on the Vertical Experiences (Devices Cloud) team, you’ll build and operate the cloud services that power Life360’s connected devices. This role sits at the intersection of hardware, firmware, and mobile, translating real-world device signals into reliable, scalable backend systems. You’ll work on high-throughput, low-latency services that manage device state, ingest telemetry, and enable new device-driven features for millions of members worldwide. The work is hands-on, systems-oriented, and designed for engineers who enjoy solving messy, real-world problems at scale.

You don’t just use AI tools. You think natively in them. Your primary workflow involves orchestrating agents to create specs, generate code and tests, verify results, and perform reviews. You’ll help establish and evolve AI-native engineering practices for the Vertical Experiences team while delivering features that ship to production weekly.

For candidates based in the US, the salary range for this position is $148,000 to $216,000 USD. For candidates based out of Canada, the salary range for this position is $171,500 to $201,000 CAD.

Note: Please be aware that the job title for positions in Canada will be “Developer” in lieu of “Engineer.“We take into consideration an individual’s background and experience in determining final salary- therefore, base pay offered may vary considerably depending on geographic location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The compensation package includes a wide range of medical, dental, vision, financial, and other benefits, as well as equity.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, build, and maintain backend services that support device connectivity, telemetry ingest, health monitoring, and command/control operations.

  • Collaborate with firmware, mobile, and product teams to define APIs and workflows for device features.

  • Deliver scalable, resilient systems in a microservices environment running on AWS (EKS, Lambda, DynamoDB, SQS, etc.).

  • Build and own data pipelines for high-throughput streams using Kafka or similar streaming tech.

  • Instrument services for observability, reliability, and SLO compliance.

  • Participate in on-call rotations and live incident response.

  • Write clean, testable, performant code and help improve CI/CD and automation.

  • Orchestrate AI coding agents daily for spec writing, code generation, test authoring, incident triage, PR review, and system design

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years experience building backend services in Java, Go, Python, or similar languages.
  • Experience with microservices architecture, RESTful API design, and distributed systems.
  • Strong skills with cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred), container orchestration, and deployments.
  • Experience with databases (relational and/or NoSQL), caching layers, and event/streaming systems.
  • Comfortable collaborating across teams and articulating technical tradeoffs.
  • Hands-on agentic AI workflow experience.

Nice-to-Have

  • Experience with IoT or telematics systems.
  • Familiarity with Kafka, Kinesis, or other streaming platforms.
  • Experience with high-frequency ingest systems and time-series data.

A background with observability tooling (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry).

  • Knowledge of SRE practices and automated testing frameworks.

AI-Native Expectations

We use AI coding tools as a professional standard on this team. Here’s what that means in practice:

  • Daily use: You use AI coding assistants (we support Claude Code, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot) for real, substantive tasks: analysis, coding, refactoring, testing, navigating codebases, and documentation. Not just research or autocomplete.
  • Judgment and ownership: AI-generated code gets the same review you’d give any PR. You are accountable for everything you ship.
  • Velocity: We expect senior engineers who use AI well to operate with meaningful leverage — doing more with the same time, taking on problems that would otherwise require a larger team.
  • Team leadership: You share what works. You automate prompting strategies that others can build on.
  • Continuous learning: The tooling is changing fast. You stay current and bring recommendations to the team.

Our Benefits

  • Competitive pay and benefits.
  • Medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance plans (100% paid for US employees). We offer supplemental plans for medical and dental for Canadian employees.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • 401(k) plan with company matching program in the US and RRSP with DPSP plan for Canadian employees.
  • Mental Wellness Program & EAP.
  • Flexible PTO and 12 company-wide days off throughout the year.
  • Learning & Development programs.
  • Equipment, tools, and reimbursement support for a productive remote environment.
  • Free Life360 Platinum Membership for your preferred circle.
  • Free Tile Products.

Life360 Values

Our company’s mission-driven culture is guided by our shared values to create a trusted work environment where you can bring your authentic self to work and make a positive difference.

  • Be a Good Person — We have a team of high integrity people you can trust.
  • Be Direct With Respect — We communicate directly, even when it’s hard.
  • Members Before Metrics — We focus on building an exceptional experience for families.
  • High Intensity, High Impact — We do whatever it takes to get the job done.

Our Commitment to Diversity

We believe that different ideas, perspectives and backgrounds create a stronger and more creative work environment that delivers better results. Together, we continue to build an inclusive culture that encourages, supports, and celebrates the diverse voices of our employees. It fuels our innovation and connects us closer to our customers and the communities we serve. We strive to create a workplace that reflects the communities we serve and where everyone feels empowered to bring their authentic best selves to work.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at Life360. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, disability status or any legally protected status.

We encourage people of all backgrounds to apply. We believe that a diversity of perspectives and experiences create a foundation for the best ideas. Come join us in building something meaningful. Even if you don’t meet 100% of the above qualifications, you should still seriously consider applying!

Engineer Senior Site Reliability Engineer at Fingerprint

Senior SRE owns production system reliability, sets SLOs/SLIs, drives incident response, and ensures platform performance and availability at scale.

Senior Remote Posted about 15 hours ago RemoteFirstJobs Product
What this role involves

Fingerprint empowers enterprises to detect and stop online fraud with the world’s most accurate device intelligence.  We lead our industry with bleeding-edge identification capabilities and work on turning new ideas and discoveries in the fraud detection space into reality. Our customers range from innovative startups to leading enterprise companies, including Plaid, Dropbox, and Booking.com.

Fingerprint is a globally dispersed, 100% remote company. We were named on on the 2026 Forbes Best Startup Employers list and ranked #803 on the 2026 Inc. 5000 list of America’s fastest-growing private companies.

We have raised $77M and are backed by Craft Ventures (Tesla, Facebook, Airbnb ), Nexus Venture Partners ( Postman, Apollo.io, MinIO, Druva) and Uncorrelated Ventures ( Redis, Rollbar,  Gradle).

About the role

Are you a systems-minded engineer who is happiest when production tells you something you didn’t expect? Do you care less about how a system looks on a diagram than about how it behaves at 3am under load it wasn’t designed for? Do you want to own reliability for a platform that answers millions of identification requests a day, where being wrong or being slow is a customer-visible event? If so, we have the perfect opportunity for you.

We’re looking for a Senior Site Reliability Engineer to join our Infrastructure team and take ownership of how our platform behaves in production. This is a hands-on engineering role, not an oversight one — you’ll write code and infrastructure, own systems end to end, and be measured by whether the things you own stay fast, available, and predictable as we grow.

You’ll work across observability, incident response, capacity and performance, change safety, and the tooling that makes all of it routine. You’ll define what “reliable” means for the critical paths you own, instrument them so we know before customers do, and partner with product engineering teams to make their services operable by design rather than by heroics.

Responsibilities

  • Own the reliability of core production systems end to end — you instrument them, set targets for them, operate them, and are accountable for how they behave under real traffic.
  • Define and maintain SLIs and SLOs for the critical paths you own, wire them into dashboards and alerts, and use error budget burn as the evidence base for what gets fixed next.
  • Drive alert quality: raise signal, kill noise, and close the gap where customers notice a problem before our monitoring does. Anomaly and correctness detection matter as much as uptime.
  • Take a lead role in incident response — investigate systematically across service boundaries, restore service, and write postmortems that produce follow-ups people actually complete.
  • Build secure, resilient, and cost-efficient infrastructure, with explicit attention to failure modes: timeouts and retries, backpressure and load shedding, graceful degradation, and blast radius containment.
  • Do capacity and performance work with real data — load testing, profiling, saturation analysis, and headroom planning ahead of growth rather than after an incident.
  • Improve change safety: progressive delivery, automated rollback, meaningful pre-production signal, and deployment practices that make shipping boring.
  • Manage infrastructure through code and configuration (we primarily use Terraform), consistently applying patterns that align with our overall service architecture.
  • Design, write, and ship software and developer-facing tooling that reduces toil and makes operating services straightforward for the engineers who own them.
  • Run deliberate failure testing — game days and chaos exercises, staging first — to find the gaps and safe limits before customers do.
  • Partner with product engineering teams on production readiness for new and high-risk services: capacity, failure modes, rollback plans, runbooks, and on-call handoff. Teach through review rather than gatekeeping.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation, and improve it: better runbooks, clearer escalation, less pager fatigue for everyone in it.
  • Approach all engineering work with a security lens — actively looking for vulnerabilities in your own work and in peer reviews.
  • Act as the go-to person for hard production problems in your area, and mentor engineers through code review, pairing, and design feedback so operational knowledge doesn’t silo.

Qualifications

  • 6–10 years of experience in SRE, production engineering, infrastructure, or backend engineering within primarily cloud-based environments (AWS preferred), with meaningful time spent responsible for systems in production.
  • A track record of owning a system end to end — you’ve designed something significant, shipped it, operated it, and lived with the consequences when it misbehaved.
  • Hands-on experience defining and operating against SLIs, SLOs, and error budgets — not just reading the book, but getting targets adopted and acted on.
  • Strong incident skills: you’ve led or been a primary responder on high-severity, customer-facing incidents, and you’ve improved how an organization learns from them.
  • Depth in distributed systems failure modes in high-throughput, low-latency environments — cache and database saturation, cascading failure, retry storms, capacity limits, degradation and load shedding.
  • Depth in cloud infrastructure fundamentals: networking, load balancing, containerization (EKS/Kubernetes), and distributed systems.
  • Strong hands-on experience managing infrastructure through code and configuration (Terraform or equivalent).
  • Solid programming skills in Go, Python, or a comparable language — you write real, production-ready software and can ship the fix rather than only recommend it.
  • Fluency with observability tooling (Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, or similar), including instrumenting systems yourself rather than inheriting dashboards.
  • Hands-on experience operating Redis/ElastiCache in production — including cluster/shard management, failover behavior, memory eviction policies, and scaling strategies. This is a current skill gap on our team, so depth here is a strong differentiator.
  • Fluency with software engineering best practices: source control, code review, comprehensive test coverage across edge cases and errors, and safe deployment.
  • A high level of personal ownership and autonomy, with real experience working without clearly defined requirements.
  • Pragmatism over purity — you know reliability competes with delivery, can make the case for the right investment at the right time, and can say when a risk is acceptable.
  • Strong written and verbal communication in English — clear technical design docs, PR reviews, incident updates, and postmortems that bring engineers outside your team along on a decision.
  • AI-native by default. You use AI tools as a normal part of how you investigate incidents, analyze telemetry, write runbooks, and build tooling — and you have opinions, from experience, about where they help and where they don’t yet.

Compensation & Transparency

For US-based employees, the cash compensation range for this role is $152,000 – $205,000. We set standard ranges for all US roles based on function, level, and geographic location, benchmarked against similar stage growth companies. To comply with local legislation and provide greater transparency, we share salary ranges on all job postings. However, these ranges are specific to the hiring location and may differ within or outside the US.  Offers vary depending on, but not limited to, relevant experience, education, certifications/licenses, skills, training, and market conditions.

Engineer Sr Data Engineer at Protective Life

Senior Data Engineer designs, builds, and operates production data pipelines on Databricks using Python, SQL, and Apache Spark, owning end-to-end data flow through medallion architecture layers.

Senior Posted about 15 hours ago RemoteFirstJobs Product
What this role involves

The work we do has an impact on millions of lives, and you can be a part of it.

We help protect our customers against life’s uncertainties. Regardless of where you work within the company, you’ll be helping provide protection and peace of mind when our customers need it most.

Protective is looking for Data Engineers to design, build, and operate production data pipelines on Voyager, our Databricks lakehouse on Azure. You will own the end-to-end flow of data through a medallion architecture — ingesting source data into the Bronze layer, applying cleansing, validation, and conformance in Silver, and publishing trusted, consumption-ready data products in Gold.

This role sits at the intersection of engineering, analytics, and platform operations. You will write production-grade Python and SQL, enforce data contracts, and help Protective treat data as a product with named owners and real consumers. You will be embedded on a delivery pod that owns its data products end to end, rather than servicing tickets from a queue.

On Voyager, the medallion layers are named Raw, Prep, and Prod. They map directly to Bronze, Silver, and Gold and are used interchangeably in this description.

Key Responsibilities

•    Design, develop, and maintain production data pipelines on Databricks using Python, SQL, Apache Spark, and Delta Lake.

•    Build Bronze-layer ingestion that reliably captures data from APIs, relational databases, flat files, cloud storage, and SaaS platforms — using dlt (dltHub) and Databricks-native ingestion where each fits — including incremental loading, pagination, watermarking, state management, and replay after failure.

•    Develop Silver-layer transformations in dbt and Python over Delta Lake that cleanse, standardize, type, deduplicate, validate, conform, and enrich data so that it is reusable across domains. A meaningful share of this role is making messy source data trustworthy.

•    Create Gold-layer data products: dimensional models, slowly changing dimensions, fact and bridge tables, aggregates, and serving tables aligned to how consumers actually query.

•    Produce and maintain the curated datasets ML engineering trains and serves models from — feature and training tables that are versioned and reproducible, not one-off extracts.

•    Author and maintain data contracts using the Open Data Contract Standard (ODCS) — schema with real semantics, named owner, known consumers, quality rules, and freshness expectations — and assess backward compatibility before every change.

•    Implement data quality as code: uniqueness and not-null on keys at minimum, plus referential, accepted-value, freshness, and custom business-rule tests, surfaced to producers and consumers rather than buried in logs.

•    Orchestrate ingestion and transformation as assets in Dagster, deployed to Dagster Cloud, and operate what you build across development, branch, and production deployments — schedules and sensors, asset dependencies, backfills, and run observability.

•    Apply governance through Unity Catalog — catalogs, schemas, external locations, grants, row- and column-level security, and lineage — and handle credentials through Azure Key Vault rather than in code.

•    Implement incremental and merge-based processing with Delta Lake (MERGE, schema evolution, time travel, OPTIMIZE) and tune Spark jobs, table layouts, and compute for performance and cost.

•    Troubleshoot production failures, data-quality issues, source-system changes, and late-arriving or duplicate data — including backfills and recovery — and take part in the pod’s on-call rotation for the pipelines it owns, with root-cause analysis that closes the gap rather than reopening the ticket.

•    Build and maintain CI/CD for data assets in Azure DevOps — automated tests and CI checks on dlt, dbt, and Dagster changes, promotion from development through branch deployments to production, and releases that are repeatable and auditable.

•    Instrument what you own for observability: freshness, volume, quality, latency, and cost, with alerting tied to the SLAs and SLOs your contract commits to instead of depending on someone noticing.

•    Work inside the platform’s control expectations — least-privilege access, secrets in Azure Key Vault, change management through pull request and pipeline, and audit evidence that falls out of the deployment path rather than being reconstructed later.

•    Participate in code review and document architecture, runbooks, and data products so others can discover, trust, and reuse them.

•    Work with data architects, analysts, product owners, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into maintainable data solutions.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

•    Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field; equivalent practical experience considered.

•    3+ years building and supporting production data pipelines in a cloud data platform environment.

•    Strong hands-on Python and SQL. Both are used daily and neither substitutes for the other.

•    Hands-on experience with Databricks or a comparable Spark-based lakehouse, including Delta Lake tables, MERGE, and incremental load patterns.

•    Practical understanding of medallion / multi-layer lakehouse design, and the judgment to say what belongs in Bronze versus Silver versus Gold.

•    Experience ingesting data from APIs, relational databases, files, or SaaS applications, including the incremental and state-management problems that come with it.

•    Working knowledge of dimensional modeling — grain, keys, facts and dimensions, slowly changing dimensions — and of ELT design patterns and data quality practice.

•    Experience with orchestration and scheduling using Dagster, Databricks Workflows, Airflow, Azure Data Factory, or similar.

•    Git-based source control, pull request review, automated testing, and CI/CD as normal practice — Azure DevOps or comparable.

•    Experience troubleshooting production data failures, performance bottlenecks, and source-system changes.

•    Experience with pipeline monitoring and alerting, and a working understanding of what a freshness or quality SLA means once real consumers depend on it.

•    Ability to explain technical designs and trade-offs to both technical and non-technical partners.

Preferred Qualifications

•    Databricks certification (Data Engineer Associate or Professional) or equivalent demonstrated depth.

•    Unity Catalog experience: catalogs, schemas, volumes, external locations, storage credentials, permissions, and lineage.

•    dbt on Databricks, or another transformation framework used alongside Spark.

•    Python-based modeling frameworks over Delta Lake, and experience implementing Type 2 history, surrogate keys, and merge strategies in code.

•    Experience with a declarative Python ingestion framework such as dlt (dltHub), Airbyte, Meltano, or Fivetran.

•    Dagster experience specifically, including assets, asset checks, sensors, schedules, and branch deployments.
